Greek Cross Block; May 2015

Welcome to the very first blog post of the Pensacola Modern Quilt Guild. We are so excited that the first meeting was a huge success.  The founding members (Yvonne, Becky & Donna) put tons of hard work and countless hours of planning into getting everything ready, and it was worth it!  We enjoyed meeting and seeing all of you there and sharing the joy of modern quilting.  Becky did a wonderful presentation on Modern Quilting and introduced our first block for a modern
Quilt of Valor with red, white and blue fabrics.

Below are some samples, and a link to the tutorial by Double Nickel Quilts here.

Becky mixed it up with the red, white, and blues as you can see from the above example. This is a great display of small scale prints as well.

Here's the layout of all the different steps of making the block.

Becky also showed us a neat trick on how to trim a closed HST block to its finished size with just one cut. She has posted directions on her blog Always Sew Busy.

During the meeting, we all voted to use this block for our first  Block Lottery as well. We all decided on brights for the center and corners and light or low volume for the back ground. I will be making my blocks for both quilts and posting them by the weekend.  Please make as many blocks as you would like and post them on Facebook or Instagram #pensacolamqg. Bring them untrimmed to the June meeting for participation giveaway tickets. Each block of any kind will receive one participation ticket. If you make 3 or more blocks, you will receive an extra ticket. For the Block Lottery you can choose to use your participation tickets to win the group of blocks that have been made or use them for the giveaways.

We all look forward to seeing you at the June meeting. We will be sending out the June newsletter soon and adding the minutes of the May meeting to the blog. Thank you for all your support and encouragement.

 Happy sewing!
Yvonne
