Cotton and Steel Designer Highlight, Pick Up Sticks, April 2016

We had a wonderful presentation by Juliette on Modern Pick Up Sticks block by Jacquie Gering.
This block is so easy and fun. Juliette demonstrated two ways to make this block. The  first block she made (on the left), she cut and pieced the fabric vertically. Then, she cut horizontally and pieced the sticks into the block. She discovered that while this way is a nice. If you alternate vertical and horizontal cuts (as seen in the photo on the right), it gives your blocks so much more dimension. In the block, she also used 1 inch strips to give over all continuity. You can however make the sticks any size variations, colors, and background colors that you like. You can add as many or little sticks as you like. This block would be great for stash busting. That is the pure joy of this block.

You can see Jacquie Gering and Katie Pedersen's quilt above over at Jacquie Gering's Blog.

There's plenty of tutorials

Block Lottery

12.5"  finished Kona White background and 1" or varied width of strips. You can use as many strips or as little strips as you like. You can use solids or prints as sticks and cut them larger as well. This block is forgiving. It is best done with a larger background 13.5" and when finished piecing in sticks, cut it down to size.

May 21st Birthday Party

We are so excited that it has been 1 year!
We will be having a short program with a nice birthday celebration afterwards. We are bringing food and gift exchange of a small handmade item or a notion. You don't have to participate in the gift exchange, it is optional. When you bring in your gift, you will put it in a brown bag. We will then give you a number to come and pick a bag.

Cotton and Steel Fat Fat Eighth Swap
You can bring in up to 2 yards cut into eight fat fat eighths. The cutting chart is here.
They can be the same or different fat eighths. Put each 8 fat fat eighths in a ziplock baggy with your name on it.
You may not leave with the same fabric you brought, but you will leave with the same amount you brought. You may get duplicates. Although, we try to avoid it. Please upload your picture of fabrics that you are bringing to facebook. This cuts down on duplicates.

Quiltcon 2017 Charity Quilt

Juliette is also heading up the charity quilt for Quiltcon. She will be sending out all the details and coordinating sew days. So, stay tuned for all those updates. Everyone seems so excited to get this quilt done, and I am too. I can't wait to see the finish hanging at Quiltcon.

FACEBOOK

We have a facebook, and we do keep it for members only.  The reason that we keep it this way is so that we as members have a place to share and have access to members information along with other guild information about meetings and minutes in the files section. The budget was passed and that is also in the file section of facebook. We do have this blog for the public. You can also find us on Instagram @Pensacolamqg and Flickr as Pensacolamqg. If you are interested in membership so that you can have the benefits of membership, you are always welcome to join. Dues are 25.00 for the year. You can email Pensacolamqg@gmail.com. We would be happy to send you a  membership form.

As always, please come and join us at our meeting. There's open sewing afterwards. We love having guests. Please bring a quilt or whatever you are working on to show and tell. You can find the information in the above meeting tab at the top of the page.

Thank you
