Flying Geese, Cathedral Windows & Jacquie Gering; February 2016

The Easy, Modern Cathedral Window Method

Welcome to the Pensacola MQG blog. This month, we had a wonderful presentation given by Janie. She showed us the traditional, time consuming way to make the cathedral window block, followed by the modern, quick way. We've put together a board on Pinterest where you can find many different methods and various examples. See the link below.

Janie's beautiful cathedral window pin-on note board uses fabric from Bonnie and Camille.

Block Lottery Flying Geese

This months block lottery is a Flying Geese block, measuring 12.5" unfinished. Please use Kona white for the geese and "sea glass" inspired colors that read as solid fabric. These colors include turquoise, aqua, sky blue, cobalt blue, emerald green, etc.
Find more inspiration on flying geese on our Pinterest page, the link is below.

Tutorial can be found on That's Sew Creative.

Fabric Swap

Suzie is heading up the fabric swaps. We are doing up to 2 yards of Kona solid fat eighths.
Put 8 fat eighths in a bag and label the color with a sticky note and your name. They don't have to all be the same color. The cutting diagram is below. If you want to come early, Yvonne can help with the cutting. Please update the Facebook swap photo album with the fabrics you are swapping. This will help us not get any duplicates.  There is a link to the facebook group in the right sidebar.
*Disclaimer- You may not get back a piece of the color fabric that you bring.*

Hst's -Half Square Triangles have been around the quilting community forever. They are a major player in quilting. These blocks are very versatile and make quilt design possibilities endless. This  design sheet seen below is a complete blank creative space. You can design your very own quilt pattern using colored pencils. There's also many digital pattern design software that you can you as well.

How to make HST's here.

Tips for cutting HST's

This tutorial can be found on Becky's blog here @ Always Sew Busy.

Block Lottery

Becky has chosen a Chevron block pattern for our block lottery. This block  uses the HST technique that  she demonstrated for  us  at our January meeting. This is a nice starter block for you to get your feet wet making  HST's. You can find the block tutorial here. How to make HST's is linked above.

This block calls for a white background and Tula pink fabrics as the chevron.

These would be beautiful blocks to win!

Charity Quilt Event

Yvonne met with Tip of NWFL charity organizations director Deanna. Where we discussed  her charity and upcoming event that will be honoring first responders called Heroes with Hearts. You can find more information on this event here. They will be having  a silent auction that will raise money for their organization and continue to give emotional support and lend valuable resources to those in need.
We were honored to be invited to create a quilt for this silent auction. The quilt below is a small version of the one that we will be making for this event. We will be meeting February 1st and February 8th in the classroom located in the left building next to A&E. It is right in the same parking lot. Left door, next to the salon from  9a.m-1p.m. Eeveryone is welcome to come and join us in making this quilt.

We put out a call for a donation of modern fabric strips in our newsletter
You all answered! Thank you to all of our members for donating. I will be putting up a charity quilts page soon, so you can follow along with our modern quilting journey.
