Carolyn Friedlander, August 2016

This month, Becky gave a great power point presentation on Carolyn Friedlander. Carolyn is a modern fabric and pattern designer, as well as an author. Becky, our current president this year, has set a goal to focus on one modern designer to highlight each month. Modern quilting and fabric is always changing, so highlighting these designers gives our members a very good picture of modern quilting.

Charity

Betty, our secretary, also chairs our charity sewing for Favor House in Pensacola. This organization helps women and their children who have need a safe place to stay when they have to leave their homes due to domestic violence. Betty accepts donations of quilts from baby to twin bed size and takes them to Favor House, frequently. If you'd like to donate any quilts for this cause, please see Betty.
The website for Favor House is:

These are 16 quilts to be donated.

Member Discussion

Becky also led a wonderful member discussion. We discussed some different ideas about how to continue the block lottery in a way that will encourage as much member participation as possible. Many members liked the idea of incorporating a skill building series, and a block of the month quilt along. During the following month, please think about what skills you'd like the guild to cover, ideas for blocks, and any block of the month ideas that you have for suggestions. Next month, bring your ideas, patterns, books, etc. to the meeting for further discussion.

Weeks Ringle and Bill Kerr, Paper piecing, July 2016

This month, Becky gave a fantastic presentation and wonderful tips about paper piecing.  Our quiltcon quilt has a lot of this paper piecing involved in it. So, this was the perfect time to dive in and many members have learned how to paper piece. Paper piecing offers the ability to get nice clean lines. Once you get the basics covered, you can make tons beautiful patterns and very straight lines. Below, I have a sample of some Paper Piecing from Pinterest.

            Quiltcon Charity Quilt

The first sew day was a great success. Many members participated and learned new quilting techniques. We got to see some of the lovely blocks that were created at the July meeting as well.  A small group of us stayed after the July meeting and sewed more blocks. We will be staying after the next meeting to sew. In August,  there will be some focus on curved piecing.  So, you won't want to miss it. We will send out an email with any other sew days that are coming up in the future to keep everyone informed. If you have any questions about the charity quilt, you can send it to Wendy, or you can send an inquiry to our guild email
pensacolamqg@gmail.com.

Alison Glass, Not Your Grandmother's Log Cabin, June 2016

This month Barbara demonstrated a block called "Not your Grandmother's Log Cabin". I was not personally there, but I am sure that the meeting was great. This block makes a really unique layout and is perfect for prints or solids.

Designer Highlight

Our designer highlight this month is Alison Glass. She is a fabric designer and quilter. She also does embroidery. She works with Anover Fabrics. You can find more information about her on her website Alison Glass. You can see a video about her here.

Hearts for Pulses

PMQG donated Hearts for Pulses blocks

Our treasurer, Suzie is coordinating for our guild's Heart for Pulses blocks to send to  the OrlandoMQG Heart's for Pulses Charity drive. They will be donating quilts to the people that were affected by the shooting in Orlando.  We will be making these heart blocks together after the next meeting, and you can bring them with you also. All you need to do is bring your sewing machine.
We will be using the 10" block from Cluck Cluck Sew tutorial We are asking that the heart to be in a bright color and the background to be white or low volume.

Quiltcon Charity Quilt Chair Person

Wendy has generously offered to chair the quiltcon charity quilt. I am so excited that we have a vision from the June meeting. Publicly, we will be keeping it a surprise. Wink, wink. So, stay tuned. I am excited to announce the first sew day will be held July 16th Saturday at 10:00 am in the building in back to the left of A and E Pharmacy 923 New Warrington Road.
